That stung.
âI care,â she whispered.
His gaze narrowed. âSo I should?â
She heard the inflection of his words. The question.
Quietly, she put her cutlery down and gave him her full attention. âTheyâre my family. Of course they should matter.â
âTo me?â he asked. âWhy would they matter to me?â
A boy with dark hair curling around his ears appeared in her mind without invitation. A boy dipping torn bread into cheese and handing it to the shadow of a woman she couldnât picture. Couldnât conjure anything but that shadow, which appeared as clear in her mind as a photograph.
âDonât you understand?â she asked.
But how could he understand? Her family wasnât perfect, but...
His gaze flicked to the left and then zeroed back on her within the flash of a millisecond. âUnderstand what?â
Floraâs heart stopped as she took in the deep frown lines between the darkly shaped eyebrows, the focused intensity of his gaze.
âTheyâre your family now, too.â
Slowly he nodded, and she let out a breath she hadnât realised she was holding.
His hands flexed where heâd placed them on the table. âWhat do they need?â
âWhat do you mean?â
He splayed his fingers, palms forward. âIs the farm in some sort of financial trouble?â
âOf course not,â she dismissed. âThe farm is doing well. The farm is fine. What does that have to do with anything?â
âTheir livelihoodâyour family homeâis safe?â He frowned. âThen they donât need me.â
âParents are not accepting dowries these days, Raffaele, and Iâm pretty sure it used to be the other way around.â
âDowries?â His frown deepened, before vanishing completely. Leaving his face a smooth mix of understanding and relief. âHow much would they like?â
She shook her head. âNo, thatâs not what I meant.â
âThen what did you mean?â
Flora shifted in her seat. Twisted her bottom and joined her knees until she faced him fully. âNo payment is required. No membership fees. We are having a baby together, so our families will...â she held her hands out in front of her and pulled them far apart â...merge.â She clapped her hands together.
The frown returned, and her urge was to stand up and place her thumb at the base of those lines. Swipe upwards and smooth them free. But she didnât. She sat and waited for him to join the dots. For him to understand what she meant.
They were all family now, whether or not he understood it.
âYou will take my name,â he intoned.
âTheyâll still be my family. And my motherâs birthday is in two weeks.â
âWe will be in Sicily,â he interjected.
âSicily?â she asked. âI thought you lived here? On the boat?â
âWe canât raise our baby on a super-yacht.â
âYou want to raise the baby in Italy?â
âSicily,â he corrected. âI want to raise our baby in Sicily.â
âWhere you grew up?â
âYes.â
âWhy? I thought you said it was out of the way? Wonât we need a hospital?â
âThe village is not what it once was.â
âBecause you changed it?â
He nodded. âWe will have no trouble with transportation. Nor with access to a hospital. Most things will come to us. And they are already being organised.
